  Both of our kids went to Headstart East Melbourne and absolutely loved it. Our family has been going there 5 days a week for almost 5 years and we are extremely sad to be moving on. The staff are incredibly caring and passionate about what they do. They have become an extension of our family. Our kids made such strong friendships and simply adore the teachers. The location was the initial attraction (so close to the city) but we stayed because of the people, the quality of care and the range of activities. Learning is predominantly play-based and the educators are thoughtful and creative in engaging kids in different activities. Over the years our kids enjoyed visits to the library, Fitzroy Gardens and the NGV. They built a spaceship when learning about the solar system, created a huge octopus and tropical fish when learning about the sea, orchestrated a mini-Olympics and made gorgeous cards and artworks to bring home for special occasions. There were structured classes for sports, music, yoga and Italian. They learned about different cultures when celebrating culturally significant days and prompted by the different backgrounds of the children and staff at the centre. They learned new songs, read stories, did lots of painting and drawing, built things with blocks, made a mess with sand and play-dough, danced and ran about and had lots of cuddles and laughs. The use of technology made it extremely easy to keep up to date with the key things that were important to us at different ages (eg, focusing more on sleeping, feeding and nappy changes when they were babies and as they became older, focusing more on learning outcomes and providing photos each day of some of their activities). The centre is in an inner city office building but there is a large play area on a balcony that adjoins four of the rooms and a two-tiered roof top garden/playground on Level 4 with all sorts of toys and play equipment so the kids get lots of time outdoors playing and enjoying different seasons. Above all, though, the staff are genuinely caring and that underpinned our kids being so happy there and us being so comfortable having our kids there every day.
